Matt and team-mate Jonny Lang were crowned British GTC champions at the annual GT/F3 awards dinner in central London last Friday night.
The championship was confirmed by Motor Sports Association (MSA) headquarters after a tribunal decided in Matt’s favour after an incident at Brands Hatch back in August.
An ecstatic Matt who had been waiting for the decision for nine weeks said, ‘It’s great to finally get the decision we have all been hoping for. Know one more than me would have rather it was sorted on the track but sometimes this is not always possible. To be British champion at anything is not easy to achieve so I want to enjoy this time for all its worth and thank everyone involved from my father, fiancée Elise, family and sponsors who are all involved at some level. This is definitely the biggest title of my career so far and I hope that it will help me to secure funds for the future, as I definitely haven’t finished yet!’
Matt also congratulated team-mate Jonny Lang, who wasn’t present at the awards, ‘Jonny has done a fantastic job when you look at his relative inexperience. He really has driven all year with the maturity and speed of a driver with year’s more experience. On top of all that he’s a really top bloke and I think our strong relationship meant that over the season we could carry each other if one of us was struggling. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive with him in the future and I wish him all the luck whatever he does.’
Matt also thanked team manager Piers Maserati for his efforts over the season as well as all the mechanics at Trackspeed racing especially Steve Moody, the chief engineer, for his hours of tireless work ensuring the car was ready for battle every race.
Matt’s exact future is unclear at the moment but he says he will definitely stay with GT racing, ‘For me it was a bit if a gamble doing GT’s this year with no experience. Having just won the Clio winter series I felt I should have stayed with saloon cars but my manager Dennis Rushen and Piers Maserati convinced me as they felt GT racing has a big future in Britain and Europe. Today I can’t agree more, with increased drivers and cars entering all the time, the future is bright for GT racing and I want to be a part of that.’
