The Alan Boswell autumn independent financial planning seminar has become an established part of Norwich's financial calendar. This year's event, held on 18th October, was the best attended to date.

Around 170 of the IFA's clients gathered in the Norfolk Lounge at Carrow Road to listen to two excellent speakers from the financial services industry and to our special guest speaker Michael Brunson, retired ITV newsreader and political editor.

Peter Fitzgerald from investment managers Insinger de Beaufort took us on a whistle-stop tour around world stock markets. In our opinion, a good dose of his very practical and forthright views on the investment process should be essential for anyone pondering a commitment to the stock market.

David Lane from insurers AXA tackled the thorny subject of inheritance tax and in particular the government's recent re-writing of the tax rules for trusts. He dealt with this tricky area with clarity and precision, characteristics that the Treasury's legal draftsmen would do well to copy.

Of course, everyone was looking forward to Michael Brunson's talk. In his time as ITN's political editor, Michael has interviewed everyone who was anyone in UK politics, so he was able to sprinkle his talk liberally with anecdotes and insights that were fascinating, highly amusing and quite often told at his own expense. He talked about how he got into broadcasting, about his days as a correspondent in Washington and even managed to work in a good dig at financial advisers, which was much enjoyed by the audience. In short our guests were not disappointed, as the applause at the end confirmed.

The buffet lunch provided by Delia's Canary Catering was as good as ever and we were very grateful to our speakers for staying on to chat with the guests. Quite a few guests answered the quiz question correctly and bottles of champagne went to three lucky winners.
