What is a NEBOSH general certificate?
The NEBOSH General Certificate course provides a superb grounding to anyone who works in any industry and wants to learn the basics of health and safety. This market-leading health and safety course is tried, tested and trusted.
Why is the NEBOSH General Certificate so important?
The qualification will provide students with a solid understanding in the fundamentals of managing health and safety within their organisation. At the heart of the training, it’s about giving people the skills and confidence to keep people safe.
Students will also gain a comprehensive understanding of UK Health and Safety legislation. The skills and knowledge gained will enable students to ensure their organisation is meeting its legal responsibilities.
How long is the course?
We run our training courses over two weeks, Monday to Friday. Students will, however, need to commit additional time for revision and any homework assigned. In addition, students will need to be available on the day of the exam.
We also provide additional complimentary revision days prior to the exam for students who feel they require additional support.
How long is the exam?
The exam format has recently undergone changes and the traditional sit-down exam is gone. Instead, delegates must undertake two assignments to demonstrate their learnings:
NG1 is an open book exam where students are given 24hrs to complete questions based on a given scenario. The purpose of the assessment is to demonstrate that students can apply their knowledge in real world scenarios.
NG2 is a marked risk assessment based on the student’s workplace, they have 10 days to complete the assessment. Students will need to demonstrate a practical application of managing and controlling risk.
All our students will be provided with mock exams and taught how to best prepare for the exams.

NEBOSH General Certificate course
Our General Certificate course is built to teach key members of your company how to administer and monitor a successful health and safety culture within your organisation.
During the course we explain legal requirements for health and safety in places of work, what as effective health and safety policy is, and cover how to implement a health and safety management framework.
The course is split into two units. Unit NG1: Management of Health & Safety & Unit NG2: Risk Assessment.
Unit NG1: Management of Health & Safety
The common theme running through the elements within unit one focus on management.
The four elements below are assessed by an open-book exam.
- Element one | Why we should manage workplace health and safety This contains explanation of the reasons for managing Health & Safety effectively, including an examination of legal standards and an introduction to the principles of contactor management.
- Element Two | How health and safety management systems work and what they look like Introduces the idea of health and safety management systems and how these are set in organisational policies.
- Element Three | Managing risk and understanding people and processes Deals with a wide range of topics that sit at the core of effective health and safety management. Topics include health and safety culture, how this culture can be improved, risk assessments, the development of safe systems of work, and emergency procedure.
- Element Four | Health and safety monitoring and measuring Contains an exploration of active and reactive monitoring, accident reporting and investigation, and health and safety auditing.
Unit NG2: Risk Assessment
The common theme that runs through the elements within unit two are hazards and the practical control of the risk created by hazards. They do not deal with management issues, such as accident reporting or auditing, which is included in Unit 1.
- Element Five | Physical and psychological health Contains an explanation of six physical and psychological health hazards: noise, vibration, radiation, mental ill health, work-related violence and substance abuse.
- Element Six | Musculoskeletal health Looks at musculoskeletal health and covers the topics of work-related upper limb disorders, manual handling and mechanical load handling equipment.
- Element Seven | Chemical and biological agents Deals with chemical bilocation agents within a workspace environment.
- Element Eight | General workplace issues Contains an explanation of a wide range of general workplace issues such as welfare provision, working at height, confined space entry, lone working, slips and trips, safe moment of pedestrian, vehicles in the workplace, and work-related driving.
- Element Nine | Equipment within the workplace Focuses on work equipment and the hazards and control measures associated with simple hand tools, power tools and machinery.
- Element Ten | Fire Looks at fire safety and covers basic fire prevention, the control of fire spread, fire alarms systems and fire evacuation.
- Element Eleven | Electricity Deals with hazards and risks of electricity, and typical workplace control measures.

Yes, the NEBOSH General Certificate is recognised as a level 3 vocational qualification on the UK Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) and Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
The NEBOSH General Certificate is also accepted by professional membership organisations. For example, successful delegates may apply for Technical Membership within the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Both courses are well respected in the industry. The NEBOSH qualification is longer and more comprehensive with a broader syllabus, it is therefore considered a higher-level qualification.
IOSH training provides a general understanding of Health and Safety aimed at line managers and supervisors. The NEBOSH training is aimed more for senior managers or those with specific safety responsibilities who require a more comprehensive training course.

The qualification provides a steppingstone for individuals wishing to work towards Chartered Status within Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (TechIOSH) of IOSH.
There are a number of additional training routes to continue progression, most commonly are the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or the NVQ level 6 in Health and safety. Both of which meet the academic requirements to progress to a Graduate member (GradIOSH) of IOSH.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 11 SCQF credit points. It is often stated as being comparable to an A-Level.
