2017 – The year in review

2017 in review

2016 was a very special year for Alan Boswell Group. We were fresh from winning Independent Broker of the Year Award, we launched our new website, raised a huge amount for charity and acquired S-Tech Insurance Services in Cambridge.

It was unimaginable that we could have another year like that – but 2017 comes close.

Alan Boswell Risk Management

From a note scribbled on the back of a train ticket to a new company in a matter of months. It’s the stuff only seen on film – but this was the real-life scenario as Alan Boswell Risk Management launched in March 2017.

We already provided some health and safety advice to clients, but recognised that many of them had to use external agencies to meet their obligations. It therefore seemed logical to bring in some additional resource and provide a one-stop solution for insurance and risk management.

Three members of staff joined in March as we launched the new company and we’ve subsequently hired another two employees to help us meet demand.

As Group MD Chris Gibbs commented at the time: “Now our clients don’t need to juggle different companies for insurance, risk management and inspections – they can get a complete package from us.”

Sutcliffe Insurance Brokers

It felt like the dust had only just settled on the S-Tech acquisition when we were able to announce the acquisition of Sutcliffe Insurance Brokers in Boston and Laceby. The company was rebranded as Alan Boswell Insurance Advisers and all 25 members of staff were retained, bringing the group total head-count to in excess of 320 and Gross Written Premium handled by the group to £90m.

It is the first time in 35 years of trading that the group has had an insurance broker outside of East Anglia and the move represents a major step in our continued growth.

Highly commended

Okay, let’s get the bad news out of the way, we didn’t win. But we were shortlisted for three prestigious industry awards in 2017.

At the Insurance Times Awards, we were shortlisted for Commercial Broker of the Year and Independent Insurance Broker of the Year, in which category we were highly commended (basically, we came second!).

At the Insurance Age Awards, we were shortlisted for the Customer Service Award category too, which was in recognition of our outstanding customer service standards. Speaking of which…

Further Feefo recognition

Feefo Gold Trusted Service

For the second time running, we picked up Gold-Trusted Service status from the independent review site, Feefo.

It is their highest plaudit and is only awarded to companies that score at least 4.5 out of 5 from at least 50 reviews. We scored 4.8 from well over 1,000 reviews. We’re wondering when they’ll introduce a platinum level!

Scores and stars are all well and good – but we like to read your reviews. We act upon any feedback that suggests we may have underperformed. Plus, we also recognise individual staff who have excelled.

You can read all our reviews here.

Royal Norfolk Show

2017 saw us take our own stand at the Royal Norfolk Show for the first time. It was a wonderful event (despite the weather!) and the word on the street was that our hospitality was second-to-none. Of course, that might be the prosecco talking, but, either way, we’ll be back in 2018 and we’d love to see you there.

Community spirit

We have to admit, we’ve had another amazing year when it comes to fundraising.

We have yet to establish the final amount raised for our charities of the year, Big C and Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, but it will undoubtedly be another incredible sum. Our employees have gone above and beyond with their fundraising efforts again and we expect the total to be north of £20,000.

Alan Boswell Group sponsor Norwich City FC

We’ve also renewed our sponsorship of Norwich City Football Club for a further three years. That’s alongside our continued our support of grassroots sports. For instance, we now sponsor Yare Boat Club, Newmarket Rugby Club, Milton and Mulbarton Football Clubs, in addition to the large roster of clubs we already help.

In other news…

This year has also seen the launch of an updated quote engine for our landlord customers and the first, of what we hope will be many, financial seminars.
Of course, you can read more about all these stories on our company news pages or you can find out more about our company here and in our corporate brochure.

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2018!
