Duncan Baker Joins ABG in a Financial Executive Role
Alan Boswell Group
Alan Boswell Financial Planners is pleased to welcome Duncan Baker to the team, bringing with him a unique combination of financial expertise and public service experience. A former Finance Director and Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, Duncan has spent nearly two decades in finance, business, and public service. Now, he begins a new chapter in his career, training to become a Financial Adviser with Alan Boswell Group, where his diverse background and passion for helping others are already proving to be a valuable asset.
“We’re delighted to have Duncan on board,” says Tony Robinson, Director. “His experience in finance and public life brings a fresh perspective to the team. He shares our commitment to helping clients make informed, confident decisions about their financial futures, and we’re pleased to support him on this next stage of his journey.”
We spoke to Duncan to get some insight into his career so far and his future with ABG.

Reflecting on his early career, Duncan shared, "In 2005, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant and then in 2008 went to work for a large, diversified family business in North Norfolk and became the Finance Director. And I was there quite happily for 13 years".
Having previously been a councillor and Mayor and being active in the community and local charitable causes, Duncan’s career took a more politically active route, which ultimately led to his election as the MP for North Norfolk in 2019. Throughout his time as an MP, Duncan maintained his interest in business and financial matters including the financial concerns of his constituents, “Many MPs have a legal background as solicitors and similar professions, so with a background as a Finance Director I was often called upon to speak in a debate or lobby on financial services matters, auto-enrolment and pensions.”
After losing his seat in the 2024 election, Duncan re-evaluated his career and how he could best use his qualifications and experience to continue to help people, when a chance phone call from a financial services company in North Norfolk set him on a new path. "One week later, I'm travelling back from London, and the phone went, and it was a guy who ran a financial services company in North Norfolk asking me to join them as a wealth manager. Ultimately, I decided I wanted to work a little further afield, and that firm wasn’t the right fit. But thought, I could sit behind a desk and be a finance director again, or could I help people? Some of the most important decisions people make are financial ones; I’d had a Financial Adviser myself and felt like this could be a good fit with my previous qualifications and experience. If there's ever a chance to have a crack at something, this is it.”
That thought led Duncan to Alan Boswell Group (ABG), “I already knew Alastair [Drew, Finance Director] and I met with Alan [Boswell, Executive Chairman], Tony [Robinson, Director] and Sally [Key, Director] and we got on really well. I had heard many incredible things about ABG, such as the way they support their staff, their reputation in Norfolk, and the financial services community, which is outstanding, so I seized the opportunity to join the group.”
Since joining ABG in November 2024, Duncan has been actively involved in various aspects of the business. "Six months in and I'm two-thirds of the way through the exams needed to qualify as a Financial Adviser.” Duncan’s previous experience as a finance director and his ability to connect with people have been invaluable assets. "The people [at ABG] have been so welcoming. I’ve been exposed to really interesting work, whether on the insurance brokerage side or working with the Advisers on the Financial Services side, it's been challenging, but rewarding."
Duncan expects to bring a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to ABG. His background in finance and his political experience allow him to understand the complexities of financial planning and the importance of helping clients make informed decisions.
