What does PDI insurance cover?
Teaching other people how to drive is a huge responsibility, but having the right insurance can give you peace of mind and lower the financial risk to you. Here, we look at PDI (potential driving instructor) insurance, what it covers, and how much it costs.

What is a PDI?
PDI stands for potential driving instructor. A PDI must pass three tests before becoming a fully qualified approved driving instructor (ADI). The exams test your driving theory knowledge and driving ability (ADI parts one and two) and instructional ability (ADI part three).
If you’re considering becoming a PDI, you’ll need to have a DBS (disclosure and barring service) check before starting your application.
Who’s responsible if a PDI has an accident?
If you’re a PDI, you must have suitable insurance (if you’re employed, this may be included under your employer’s driving school insurance).
Your policy will list the events covered, but this typically includes accidents you or your learner driver cause. That said, be aware of any exclusions, for example; you won’t be covered if you have an accident while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You also can’t expect a payout if something goes wrong because you were using your mobile phone.
What does PDI insurance cover?
Policies vary by insurer, but most PDI insurance plans will include:
- any driver cover (including examiners)
- tuition cover
- driving test cover
Other features which some insurers will offer as standard, but others might charge you extra for.
- SDP (social, domestic, and pleasure) use for drivers over 25 (in addition to using the car for teaching)
- Off-road tuition for learners aged 14+
- Cover for individuals considered ‘high risk’ such as previously banned drivers
- Dual control replacement courtesy car
- Cover for teaching advanced driving skills, including driving with trailers
- Public liability insurance
Do I have to pay if I damage my instructor’s car or will my PDI insurance cover it?
Damage should be covered by the driving school under your own PDI insurance policy unless you’re found to be negligent (through drink, drugs, or being distracted by your phone).
Is PDI insurance different from ADI insurance?
There’s very little difference between ADI and PDI cover apart from the cost. PDI insurance generally costs more because you’re not fully qualified.
How much does PDI insurance cost?
PDI insurance should reflect the particular risks you face, and no two policies are likely to be the same.
To work out your premium, insurers will consider:
- the car you use, what insurance group it’s in, and its value
- the type of learners you teach (new learners, previously banned drivers)
- where you live and work
- claims history
To give you a clearer idea of the cost of driving instructor insurance, we looked at two scenarios:
Example one:
- PDI aged 65 years
- A group one insurance car (the lowest group) valued at £5,000
- Five years no claims bonus (unprotected)
- No previous claims and no convictions
- Lives in a low-risk insurance area
- Premium: £390
Example two:
- PDI aged 35 years
- A group ten insurance car valued at £15,000
- Five years no claims bonus (protected)
- No previous claims
- Lives within a higher-risk insurance area
- Premium: £810.94
