Reflexology has become increasingly popular. Any hands-on treatment involving members of the public could potentially lead to a claim, so it’s vital to protect yourself and your business.

We look at how complementary therapy insurance from Alan Boswell Group can help provide you with peace of mind and safeguard the wellbeing of your reflexology practice.
What insurance do I need as a reflexologist?
Although one of the benefits of reflexology is that it’s non-invasive, it still involves physical touch in a controlled environment. With that in mind, it’s crucial to cover yourself and your business with appropriate insurance; here’s what to consider.
Medical malpractice and professional indemnity
Medical malpractice insurance is one of the most important types of insurance to include. This policy covers costs if a client claims that your treatment has caused them harm or bodily injury. For example, if they believe a session has exacerbated an underlying health condition through negligence or error. It can also cover any advice you provide in your capacity as a reflexologist.
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is also essential if you’re working with the public. Policies cover accidental injury or damage to property caused by your business activities or that takes place on your premises.
Although public liability and medical malpractice sound similar, they cover two distinct types of events for insurance purposes. Medical malpractice protects you as a healthcare professional for the services and advice you provide. Public liability covers negligence that occurs while you are carrying out your work or at your work premises, not including the actual treatment.
An example of where public liability might apply could be that a client is too heavy, your massage table collapses, and your client is injured, or you accidentally spill essential oils on a client’s carpet or table, causing damage.
Product liability insurance
This covers costs if someone claims that a product you’ve used has caused injury or damage to them or their property. For example, if an essential oil you’ve used on a client causes an allergic reaction.
In addition to the products you use, product liability covers items which you supply to a client. If you also sell the products you use, you should purchase product liability cover alongside public liability cover.
Insurance for mobile and home-based reflexologists
If you run your reflexology business from home, it’s highly unlikely that your business activities will be covered by a standard home insurance policy.
Standard home insurance also won’t cover incidents involving clients, damage or theft of business equipment. Instead, you’ll need specialist reflexologist insurance that covers these risks while you’re working from home. Household insurers may not allow you to work from home with business visitors. Theft of your own contents would be restricted.
If you’re running a mobile business, you’ll need a policy that covers you to work from multiple locations. Your policy should also cover you while you’re travelling between clients or attending associated events, such as conferences and exhibitions. Covering your business equipment while mobile, including your phone, laptop, and items left in a vehicle, is essential.
Is reflexology insurance legally required in the UK?
You don’t legally need reflexology insurance, public liability, or professional indemnity to practice in the UK. Although if you have employees, you are legally required to have employers’ liability insurance. As a practising reflexologist, insurance is highly recommended to protect yourself and your business.
If you want to register with a professional organisation such as the ones below, you’ll need suitable insurance to join.
Mandatory employers’ liability insurance
If you employ anyone as part of your reflexology business (even if they’re part-time), then you must have employers’ liability insurance by law. These policies cover compensation costs if an employee becomes ill or is injured because of work.
If you don’t have employers’ liability insurance (but should have), you can be fined £2,500 for each day that you go without it. For details on exemptions and to find out more, head to GOV.UK, employers’ liability insurance.
How much does reflexology insurance cost?
Cost depends on the level of cover you choose, but as reflexology is a non-invasive therapy and considered low risk, premiums tend to be very affordable.
Bear in mind that premiums will vary based on factors unique to your business, such as:
The types of therapies you perform.
The levels of cover you choose.
Whether you employ staff.
Whether you need to cover equipment and premises.
If you’re a member of a professional organisation, many memberships give you access to exclusive insurance schemes, such as our scheme for Association of Reflexology members.
FAQs
If you provide other complementary therapies, let your insurer know. In most cases, they’ll be able to extend your policy to cover the additional treatments you provide.
Your policy will clearly set out what is and isn’t covered, but as a general rule, professional indemnity insurance will not cover deliberate wrongdoing or criminal activity. You also won’t be covered for any claims or potential claims you knew about before taking out the policy.
Typically, you’ll be able to buy a package of insurance that bundles together all your essential reflexology cover. Adding business contents to your policy for a small increase in your premium is well worth considering, particularly if you have expensive equipment.
